Question
Do I need a barcode for my products? Are UPCs required for each listing?
Answer
When adding a product manually in the Rivly seller portal, barcodes (UPC, EAN, ISBN, GTIN-14) are required for all products. Barcodes help us ensure that duplicates of the same product are not listed which degrades the shopping experience (e.g. seeing 10 of the same product in search results).
Rivly does have a barcode exemption program if you have a legitimate reason for needing to list products without a barcode, such as:
-
Private label handmade items – Products you’ve created or branded yourself.
-
Items without a product ID – Products that don’t have a GTIN, EAN, UPC, or ISBN (for example, car parts or phone accessories).
-
Product bundles – Sets that combine multiple items together, like a camera and a carrying bag sold together.
-
Unbranded or generic products – Items sold without an existing brand name.
If you believe that you qualify for a barcode exemption, please reach out to Rivly seller support with your use case and reasoning.
However, if you import the listing from Amazon, we do not require a barcode since Amazon has its own system of issuing exemptions to control this on their platform, which we accept on Rivly.
For Shopify imports, at this time we will also allow the product to not have a barcode since Shopify merchants are typically private label sellers for their own brand.
